Doing What is Best for Loved Ones:

Siblings, Family Conferences And Caregiving

It is not uncommon that most of the responsibility for the care of a love one is managed by one person.  This person may be the spouse or an adult child.  The primary caregiver may be the person who is emotionally closest to the care receiver or the one who lives the closest.  Other family members often don’t help because there is not clear communication about how they can help.

Caregivers may assume that siblings “should” offer to help or that they cannot be relied on.  Caregivers often do not realize that unconsciously they may be sending a signal that says “don’t even bother as I have this handled.”  Caregivers need to ask themselves.  “What happens to (mom)(dad)(?) if something happens to me?”  The caregiver and the care receiver may miss an opportunity for other family members to get involved in the care because they are not communicating.  Everyone may benefit from more family involvement.

Sibling Conflict

from

Caregiver.com

In times of stress, even the best of families have difficulty agreeing on what to do with Mom and Dad. But not many of us come from the best of families. Most of us come from normal families with lots of history, past disagreements, and maybe even feelings of resentment or bitterness. These issues make reaching an agreement on a very difficult situation almost impossible. Here are a few suggestions which may help make this easier.

Caregiver Inspirational Quotes

“Many of us follow the commandment 'Love One Another.' When it relates to caregiving, we must love one another with boundaries. We must acknowledge that we are included in the 'Love One Another.”

Peggi Speers

“During the last week of her father's life, Blanca stayed home with him. She said, 'I didn't bathe. I didn't sleep. I sat in the bed with him in the living room. And we were communicating all the time. I kept thinking, and it's more beautiful in Spanish, but I wanted to bottle his breathing.'― As quoted by Kevin Renner, In Search of Fatherhood

Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?

by Roz Chast

Laughter is a major stress reliever, and in her book, a memoir in cartoons, Chast uses humor and honesty to tackle the day-to-day issues experienced by a caregiver of aging parents. Adult children of senior parents will laugh with recognition as Chast recounts the tribulations of dealing with assisted living, dementia symptoms and other caregiver challenges.
