Dallas Public Library opens three makerspaces |

Dallas, Texas – Beginning September 14, the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library will house three new spaces that provide free access to unique equipment and technology for use in storytelling, fiber arts and digital preservation. Dallas Public Library will celebrate the openings with a special event 2 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 14. The Create Dallas event will include hands-on workshops and demonstrations in each space. See schedule below: The makerspaces – collectively known as Creative Spaces – will allow the public to get hands-on experience, build new skills and try new hobbies. Customers can make an appointment to use the equipment during open hours or access the space during organized events. A library card and successful completion of orientation will be required. The Story Center on the third floor is a studio for storytelling in all its forms – podcasting, video, audio recording, graphic design and more, including an iMac and a typewriter. The Fiber Arts Workroom is dedicated to all things fabric and thread, including sewing machines, contemporary and vintage patterns, fabric samples, yarn and more. The Heritage Lab includes digitization tools to make copies of irreplaceable photos, books, home movies, documents, slides and audio cassettes. The Fiber Arts Workroom is made possible in part by a gift from the Charlotte W. Geary Memorial Fund. The Heritage Lab is funded by the Dallas Genealogy Society.
