Celebrating Bob Kafka’s Leadership in the Disability Community

REACH, Inc. honors the life and legacy of Bob Kafka (February 24, 1946 – December 27, 2025), a visionary leader whose tireless advocacy transformed the landscape of disability rights.

Born in The Bronx, Bob served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and later became a lifetime member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. After earning degrees in economics and special education at the University of Houston, he dedicated his life to advancing inclusion and accessibility.

Bob co-founded the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities and served on the board of the Coalition for Barrier Free Living. He also founded the Southwest Wheelchair Athletic Association, promoting opportunities for adaptive sports. Nationally, Bob was a driving force behind REV UP and ADAPT, organizations that championed voting rights and independent living for people with disabilities.

His advocacy extended to media through “Barrier Free Futures,” a radio show and podcast focused on disability and aging. Bob’s rallying cry, “Onward” and the Joe Hill quote “Don’t mourn, organize!” continue to inspire activists everywhere.

Bob’s work shaped policy, empowered communities, and amplified voices that demanded justice that aligns with the Independent Living Movement. At REACH Inc., we celebrate his enduring impact and commit to carrying forward his mission of equity and inclusion.

A memorial celebration is scheduled for January 31, 2026, at the ADAPT office in Austin.
