I use a power wheelchair to get around almost everywhere. I say almost because some places have no sidewalks or sidewalks that are maintained poorly. I run into this problem everywhere, not just in my neighborhood. I started wondering just what the rules and regulations were for sidewalks. According to the ADA [1] Sidewalks are not a requirement but where there are sidewalks they are a passageway that must be passable for everyone. Unfortunately that is not the case.

I turned my attention to who is in charge of maintaining the sidewalks. I looked up information about the city's public works department to try to get what information I could. The City of Dallas has a 3-1-1 number that citizens can call if you have questions about the city. I called and ask the customer service agent which city department was in charge of sidewalk maintenance and I was told the streets department. I was also told I could find information about it on the Dallas City Hall website. The website was a little hard to navigate but I did manage to get some information. |
